SAFETY TEAM STATION PROTOCOLS

STATION ONE
(AGAPE BUILDING)

  1. Before first service: Walk interior of the facility and look for anything out of place, check downstairs for leaks, smells, sounds, etc.

  1. Before first service: Distribute walkie-talkies to nursery and each classroom. Introduce yourself and explain walkie-talkie protocol to volunteers in those rooms as needed. Remember, simple commands.  Tell us where you are and what is wrong.

  1. Before each service: Walk exterior of the facility.  Watch for any items out of the ordinary or that need to be put in lost and found.

  1. Before each service: Introduce yourself to children’s ministry staff.  Provide simple radio protocol reminder as ministry servants may change with services.

  1. During service: Refresh memory on:  sex offender clipboard, first aid kit and fire extinguisher locations

  1. During service: Be ready to help with anything but don’t lose sight of your primary mission: protecting those kids, it only takes a few minutes for a sexual predator to molest a child.  Be aware of potential hiding places, especially for any evening services or events, also be aware most child-related issues are non-custodial parents (kids will go with them!), watch who checks in whom and watch for anyone different picking them up, it’s okay to be uncomfortable and to make people uncomfortable to protect a child.

  1. During service: Stay inside during services.  Walk hallway, sit at station.

  1. At all times: Remember radio protocol, no unnecessary chatter. Use channel 2 for any conversations.

  1. At all times: Keep alert.  Eyes up, ears open.

  1. Before each service: Walk interior of the facility and look for anything out of place, smells, sounds, etc.

  1. Before each service: Walk exterior of the facility and playground.  Watch for any items out of the ordinary or that need to be put in lost and found.

  1. During service: Refresh memory on:  first aid kit and fire extinguisher locations

  1. During service: Be ready to help with anything but don’t lose sight of your primary mission: protecting our people.  You are potentially first contact, be ready to confront and DE-ESCALATE- De escalation tips:
  • Ask the party to speak with you about the conflict; do not tell them to “come over here” or “listen to me.” Introduce yourself and ask in a calm, respectful manner. A speaker’s tone is often more   important than the words he or she uses.
  • Set the context—or the parameters—of the situation to define the issue and help everyone to see the conflict from a third-person perspective. For example, if there is a dispute over a non-custodial parent taking a child home from the church nursery, a worker could set the context by saying, “Your child’s safety is important to us. My job as a volunteer is to make sure he is safely returned to the proper parent according to our nursery’s policies. I’d like to think we can work that out together.” Setting the context can help explain why the conflict is occurring and may lead the parties to understand what the proper resolution is.
  • Explain the options for resolving the conflict. This helps the parties to understand that they have power over the outcome and are not being backed into a corner.
  • Confirm that both parties agree on the proper action. This continues to empower them to resolve the conflict, instead of the parties feeling as if someone else is forcing them to do something.
  • Act. Put the chosen option into practice and resolve the conflict.

  1. During service: Remain inside or around sanctuary entrances during services.  Try to be random. Keep an eye on congregants, ministry servants, and pastor.

  1. At all times: Remember radio protocol, no unnecessary chatter. Use channel 2 for any conversations.
